The Melbourne 2014 Youth Pre-Conference is a joint initiative of the Melbourne Youth Force (MYF) and YEAH, the Australian-based partner supporting the local work of the MYF. Open to all young people attending AIDS2014, the Pre-Conference will focus on information sharing and skills building for young people around the political, scientific, economic and social context of HIV/AIDS.
The Pre-conference will offer a space where young people can network, learn from each other and participate in skill building workshops. It will also provide an orientation to the main conference for effective participation and advocacy. Young people aged up to 29 years are invited to apply to attend and present at the youth pre-conference, however please note that preference will be given to all ‘officially registered youth delegates aged 26 and under attending AIDS 2014′.
For those that are coming to Melbourne for the first time or would like to meet more people MYF have developed a peer-support program to connect conference delegates. The peer-support program aims to enrich the conference experience by providing a local contact for international guests, facilitate affordable accommodation options and foster global and personal networking opportunities.
Facilitating the participation of young people at AIDS2014 and empowering them to be effective advocates for youth throughout the conference and beyond, the Youth Pre-Conference recognises that while young people are at greatest risk of new HIV infections, they have the aptitude, talent and drive to Step Up the Pace and work towards the end of this disease.
Join over 200 young people from around the world at the Victorian State Library from the 18th-19th July for two days of vibrant discussion and debate about the future of HIV/AIDS advocacy.
Sessions and workshops will include debates on the latest advances in scientific and social research, media training and problem solving. A guest panel of representatives from peak HIV/AIDS organisations will also address some of the most critical and contemporary HIV/AIDS issues, including the Post 2015 Development agenda.
The Youth Pre-Conference will not only serve as an engaging and insightful precursor to AIDS 2014, but will enable young HIV/AIDS activists to establish new and long lasting friendships over common goals. It aims to bridge the gap between different cultures, different experiences, and different organisations; allowing young people to come together as a united youth front at the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne this July.
The MYF Pre-Conference sub-committee is proud to be delivering this event with support from the State Library of Victoria.
Applications to join the Youth Pre-Conference close on the 9th of May 2014. Please refer to the FAQs for more details.
